The Unintended Consequences of “Open-Mindedness”:

Sometimes all it takes is a tongue-in-cheek effort to demonstrate the problems inherent in trying to create a world where everyone behaves exactly as you want them to.

wonder woman 2017A new “Wonder Woman” movie is due out next month. It features the big budget associated with all of the contemporary Comic Hero flicks.  It also features a sufficiently-endowed actress (pictured) playing the lead character.  But to the Woke Brigade (my cute little name for that subset of people who see toilet paper through the prism of Political Correctness), the film is much more.  They gleefully point out that this is the first time in more than a decade that a Comic Hero movie has featured a female in a lead role.  That paucity may owe more to the fact that male Comic Heroes outnumber females by about 10-to-1; and not some nefarious plot on the part of Hollywood filmmakers.  But no matter…this is, “groundbreaking,” I suppose.

Enter Alamo Drafthouse — not your typical corporate movie chain.  The Atlantic reports for a horror movie screening last week, Alamo gave patrons gas masks and took them by school bus out into the woods.  Not bad.  Also last week, they showed the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie on a boat.  Creative.  I like it.

For their “Wonder Woman” screening in Brooklyn, AKA Mecca for the modern Social Justice Warrior, Alamo decided to open the ticket booths…but to women only.  Apparently an all-female crowd would fall perfectly in line with the “empowerment” offered by a buxom female superhero who ties men up and forces them to tell the truth.

“The most iconic superheroine in comic book history finally has her own movie, and what better way to celebrate than with an all-female screening?

“Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying ‘No Guys Allowed’ for one special night at the Alamo Ritz. And when we say ‘People Who Identify As Women Only,’ we mean it. Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female.

“So lasso your geeky girlfriends together and grab your tickets to this celebration of one of the most enduring and inspiring characters ever created.”

On the surface, this is innocent enough.  It’s a cute marketing gimmick; not unlike ladies night at your favorite local pub or Ladies Day at the ballpark.  But in these dark SJW-ruled times, it is—to coin a phrase—problematic.

Stephen Miller, an excellent conservative writer for the page “Heat Street” decided to make a point.  He went online and purchased a ticket for the screening.  He was not asked his gender, since credit card numbers rarely include such crucial information.  He got his ticket and showed a screenshot on Twitter.  After that came a raging torrent of Woke Brigade backlash not seen since the last time a white man tried to sell Burritos.

“Outrageous. These ignorant, vile misogynists — who’ve happily enjoyed access to all sorts of male only settings — are suddenly egalitarian.”  Another inspired Tweeter suggested Miller was demonstrating the mindset of a rapist by daring to enter a movie theater filled with women.  Others pointed out the inherent issues involved in going into a place where you’re clearly not wanted.  Another point brought up was that there would be limitless opportunities for Miller to view the movie elsewhere.

Miller, to his everlasting credit, accepted all of the slings and arrows of outrageous tweets with a solemn “I’m just going to see a movie” response.  In doing so, he allowed his detractors to make every single argument that undermines their position on other issues of free association.  He also pointed out it’s perfectly legal to buy a ticket to a screening, but it would NOT be legal to kick him out for being male. New York law specifically states that someone cannot be refused service based on their gender.  Ooops!

The people who screamed loudest about demanding Christian bakers offer services for same-sex marriages told us the same thing—that it is illegal to not offer services to someone based on sexual orientation.  Never mind that the gay couples in each instances were offered other services—just not those intended for a ceremony that the bakers found intolerable.   When it was suggested that there were any number of other bakers who could be commissioned to provide such services, the Woke Brigade cried, “Not good enough.”

I’m not opposed to the concept of same-sex gatherings.  They create unique dynamics that cannot be replicated elsewhere.  But the Social Justice Warriors have unwittingly created a social and legal climate where such gatherings are NOT allowable in a public setting.  Imagine if there were a male-only screening of the X-Men movie? There would be mass protests —MSNBC would devote a ten-hour panel discussion misogyny and sexism—the theater chain would quickly be forced to backpedal and apologize to everyone under the sun.

So…to the modern-day Political Correctness Commissars.  Congratulations!  You have created a world where gender discrimination is (in your eyes) perfectly OK.  As long as it’s the correct gender that’s being discriminated against.

And finally, you cannot tell me that this new Wonder Woman can hold a candle to Lynda Carter.  Impossible!
