“Blue Check Brigade” skewers colleague over Climate Change Blasphemy

Need proof that Climate Change belief is cultish?  Look no further than the reaction to a weekend column that simply suggested we slow down a bit on reverting to an agrarian society.  (See link blow)

BlasphemyBret Stephens, the new conservative columnist with the New York Times, published his first piece Friday.  For the mostly-liberal readership of the Grey Lady, it went over like a loud fart in Sunday School.  Stephens didn’t dispute that climate change is real.  He even agreed that is man-made.  His heresy came when he cautioned against “claiming total certainty about the science,” which (as he correctly pointed out) isn’t scientific at all:

None of this is to deny climate change or the possible severity of its consequences. But ordinary citizens also have a right to be skeptical of an overweening scientism. They know — as all environmentalists should — that history is littered with the human wreckage of scientific errors married to political power.

Stephens’ money line came near the end of the column, where he asks Climate Change supporters to not show the arrogance and hubris that many have demonstrated towards those who disagree.

“Claiming total certainty about the science traduces the spirit of science and creates openings for doubt whenever a climate claim proves wrong. Demanding abrupt and expensive changes in public policy raises fair questions about ideological intentions. Censoriously asserting one’s moral superiority and treating skeptics as imbeciles and deplorables wins few converts.”

The replies from what I call the “Blue Check Brigade,” those journalists who have blue checks because their accounts are verified by Twitter, were swift and harsh.  “Go eat dog dicks” replied Rolling Stone’s Jesse Berney.  She was fairly representative of some of the other venom the harpies trained up Stephens in the hours after publication.  I put together a quick collage of just the first handful I encountered.  You may have to click on the picture to view all of the love and tenderness.

Now keep in mind…these are credentialed journalists.  There are not random kooks with untraceable accounts living on the raw edges of social media.  These are people who earn money researching, thinking and writing about their experiences.

Cultists REALLY don’t like it when the object of their worship is questioned.  Stephens, in essence, said “Hey Guys!  I agree with you about Global Warming and man causing it…but we might want to check twice before we implement some of the policies we’re pushing.  Some of them are a little heavy-handed.  And you know—it would serve us well to not act like anyone who disagrees with us it a total dumbass.  If we show a little respect, maybe we can make some progress.”  For his trouble, he was met with a wall of raw hate from people who absolutely refuse to consider that someone else has the right to question them.

Under ordinary measurements, during ordinary times, with ordinary people; one would look at Stephens’ column and conclude that he is MUCH closer to Climate Change supporters on the ideological spectrum than he is to, say, President Trump.  But that is not good enough for the Blue Check Brigade.  They demand ideological purity and will brook NO dissent.  They don’t want a conversation, they want submission.

In that respect, they differ very little from the most rabid Trump supporters.  You know the kind.  The ones who scream “MAGA!” at the top of their lungs if someone wonders out loud why Obamacare is still in place.  Theirs is a binary world, populated only by close friends and fierce enemies.

Welcome to modern-day socio-politico discourse; where even the alleged “journalists” are ready to pillory those who dare utter impure thoughts.
